History of The Grey Cup

In 1909, Earl Grey, the Governor-General of Canada, donated a trophy for the Rugby Football Championship of Canada. The trophy, which subsequently became known as the Grey Cup, was originally open to competition only for teams that were registered with the Canada Rugby Union. Ever since that date Grey Cup became a Canadian tradition. During first 45 years of it’s history, amateur football teams could compete for Grey Cup. This has changed in 1954, restricting amateurs and changing nature of the championship to professionally focused event.

Grey Cup has been broken several times. First in 1978 by Tom Wilkinson and Danny Kepley who accidentally dropped it, then again in 1987 by another player who sat on it. Blake Dermott left his history mark in 1993 breaking the cup yet again. More recently in 2006 BC Lions accidentally broke the cup off from it’s base.
